Is the Tata Winger the ultimate affordable camping van?

There has been a buzz about the Tata Winger as an affordable option for camping in India. Due to its roomy interior and versatile layout, it’s a popular candidate as a DIY camper van for those looking not to sacrifice space, but rather have lots of flexibility in creating their ultimate camper. But there’s debate around how suitable it is for long trips, off road, or in terms of comfort when compared to purpose built camper vans. Some say its affordability and parts availability make it the perfect travel companion for budget travelers, others say that spending on a more specialized vehicle would be a better long term investment. It’s a discussion about the trade offs of cost, comfort and functionality, and how it could be adapted to be a better camper.

Absolutely! A blank canvas for the DIY enthusiast is the Winger. If you have a bit of imagination, you can make it into a cosy home on wheels without spending a fortune.

While it’s decent for weekend trips, I wouldn’t trust it for extended off grid adventures. It isn't quite built to serious overland standards.

You get what you pay for. Yes it’s cheap, but you’ll spend more time fixing it than enjoying your camping trips. It’s better to save up for a proper camper van.

It’s hard to beat for a budget option. It’s all about managing expectations and being willing to do the work to make it comfortable.

There are some amazing Winger conversions online. With a few modifications, it can compete with much pricier camper vans.

But a main concern for long trips is the Winger's reliability. I mean, I’d rather spend a little more on something that’s got a better track record.

It’s great for Indian road conditions and if anything goes wrong, it’s easy to repair. And it won’t make you cry if it gets a couple of scratches on rough terrain.
