Is the Tata Nexon EV all that it’s hyped to be, or is it just jumping the bandwagon on EVs?

Ever since the Tata Nexon EV was launched, the carmaker has been going strong. 'This is an affordable, practical electric SUV for the masses,' they say. But is it bringing us what the world had expected from it? On the one hand, some are praising range and performance, others by pointing out the lack of charging infrastructure and concerns about battery degradation. Then there's its purported real world range _vs_ those claims. Is Nexon EV still hot or are there better options to buy in today’s list of EVs? But, let's dive into the pros and cons and see if it really is all the hype that it is or if it's simply cashing in on being an early player in Indian EV game.

Of all the EVs in India (and there aren’t many), honestly, I think the Nexon EV deserves most of the hype. It is not perfect, but as an all around solid entry for anyone looking to go electric without spending the bank, its a solid choice. It’s not a bad range for a city car, and Tata is beefing up the charging infrastructure. Plus, they’ve got that SUV look to it which everyone seems to be crazy about nowadays.

Nah, it's overhyped. In hot weather with AC on, that real world range is a whole lot less than Tata claims. Good luck ever having a fast charger available when you realize you want one. This is a step in the right direction, but wait till you have better options or until the infrastructure improves if you intend to jump on the EV bandwagon.

I’ve had one for a year and love it. Yes, the range is by no means amazing, but that's not what you are going to need for the majority of commutes and weekend outings. It is addictive instant torque, and I like not going to petrol pumps anymore. It isn’t perfect but it’s a fantastic first EV for a lot of people.

If you look at it as a pioneer in the affordable EV space in India, the hype is justified. This has opened up the market, really, and forced other manufacturers to raise their game. But with so many newer options popping up all the time, it's starting to look its age a little. Tata needs to innovate and they have to continue in innovating if they are to remain ahead.

I think it's a bit of both. The Nexon EV is a good car, but there’s also quite some hype built around it due to lack of options in its price range. We'll have a much better idea of where it stands, as more competitors enter the market. It's a decent choice now, if you are EV curious and and don't want to spend a fortune.
