Is the S Cross a car ahead of its time in the Indian market?
Maruti S-Cross was launched in India in 2015 when the compact SUV segment was yet to take off. What it represented was a unique proposition: a spacious, well built crossover that drove like a car and looked like an SUV. The Maruti lineup also fetched premium features along with strong safety features with the S-Cross. It had problems with market acceptance and positioning, however. Others say the S-Cross was too ahead of its time, with a sophisticated package the market simply wasn't ready for. Some people say that Maruti's marketing and positioning of the vehicle was not good. With the discontinuation of the model, discussions on whether it was too early of a model for the Indian market or if other factors caused it to be discontinued have started.
Definitely ahead of its time. And if it were launched today, it would sit comfortably alongside the premium crossover trend.
I don't think so. It was just poorly marketed. Back then, Maruti didn’t know how to sell a premium product.
It was a good concept, but poorly executed. The market couldn’t afford the 1.6 diesel, which was the initial.
Safety and build quality were a bit ahead of their time. These aspects are just now being valued by the market.
The S-Cross was left stranded in no man's land, not an SUV enough for SUV buyers, too expensive for hatchback upgraders.
Maruti didn't evolve it to keep up with changing market trends, I'd say it was right for its time.
Ahead by some parameters (safety, refinement), behind in others (no option to petrol at first, a conservative appearance).
The Brezza had to run, so the S-Cross walked. Maruti was able to understand the premium crossover segment better.
