Is the Nissan Juke's unique design a stroke of genius or a total misfire?

When the Nissan Juke was released, it turned heads but not always in the right way. Its bulbous fenders, high mounted headlights and compact dimensions have been the subject of much heated debate between car enthusiasts and casual observers. Others argue that its bold departure from traditional SUV design is exactly what the market needs to add some much needed character to a sea of bland crossovers. Some call it an eyesore, saying its proportions are wrong and its general appearance is jarring. The Juke's design has undeniably made it an eye catcher in parking lots and on the road, but has that distinctiveness cost it broad appeal? Is its polarizing look part of the charm or over the top designers trying to be different?

You’ve got to love it or hate it, but you have to admit the Juke has balls. Nissan went full weird in a world of cookie cutter crossovers and I respect that. It’s so ugly it’s cute, it’s the pug of cars.

Genius? It’s more a drunken sketch that somehow got produced by accident. It was obviously designed by a committee of blind people who've never seen a car before.

I think it's brilliant. And that's refreshing because it's not trying to please everyone. The Juke has personality in spades and cars should. That's the kind of design that ages well because it’s not influenced by trends.

The risk that Nissan took as a designer, I appreciate, but it's a mess. It's all wrong, proportions wise, and they couldn't decide if it was supposed to be cute or aggressive. It's just too confusing to look at.

It's growing on me, honestly. Initially I thought it looked hideous but now I kind of dig its quirkiness. It’s like that weird art piece you don’t get at first but then learn to appreciate over time.
