Is the Nexon EV’s range anxiety the talk of town?

by Anikaover 1 year ago0 views7 comments
As one of India's more affordable electric SUVs (if not the most affordable), the Tata Nexon EV has been a talking point; much of the talking has been on how much range you can actually expect from it in the real world. Tata is claiming a 312 km range for the standard model and 453 km for the Max variant, but numerous users are getting much less in daily driving. But there is in fact, Debate have ensued about the range anxiety and whether there's any practical usage of the Nexon EV except for city use. Others say that the Indian charging infrastructure to handle longer trips in an EV with such a range isn’t still developed enough. Firstly others say that most daily commutes lie well within the Nexon EV’s capabilities even with reduced real world range. How much is the range degraded by AC-less vehicles, how AC usage, driving style, and road conditions affect the range? Is the concern about the Nexon EV’s range then a real issue or it is driven by a perception problem and adapting to a new way of thinking about how long you are required to travel in the car?

When people think of it they forget how people used to forget their petrol cars had range anxiety when they were first introduced. This is just a phase as we move to EVs. A handful of years from now, we will be laughing, thinking of how we were so worried.

The biggest problem I think is the lack of range consistency. On some days I come within the claimed range, on other days it's way off. Anxiety builds from that unpredictability, not from the actual number.

The manufacturers always claim the best, this is not real. Now, reduced real world range is still enough for most peoples daily needs, but due to the smaller battery and powertrain ‘wiggling’ around in the trunk you might not find a confident ride setting it makes itself comfortable to. It isn’t about the car taking care of everything, it’s about adjusting your habits.

The reality is that there is range anxiety, but not the car's fault. But it’s really more about still needing to change our mindset about having to refuel and the lack of charging infrastructure. It’s not a big deal once you get used to plugging in at night.

It just depends on your lifestyle. If you are a City driver, then Nexon EV is the best for you. If you do a lot of long trips, though, you may just need to hold on for a while with a hybrid or petrol car, until journeys can be done even more cheaply.

There isn't anything wrong with it for use in the city, but put it on a long trip and you will be ripping hair out. It was just not yet there, the infrastructure of charging. Then you spend more time planning your route around the charging stations, than actually enjoying the journey.

Not that I have driven the Nexon EV for six months, but in reality, the range anxiety is largely in your head. It’s more than enough for daily city use. It charges twice a week and I don’t have to worry about running out of juice.
