Is the Nexon CNG fuel efficient for long-distance traveling?
Families and road trip enthusiasts already have a keen liking for the Tata Nexon. Of course, the discussion then comes down to its suitability for long distance travel, now that the CNG variant has been introduced. However, CNG is known to be more economical than petrol, and it can make a big difference in fuel costs on long trips. But it also has its problems. The CNG stations aren’t so common like petrol pumps particularly on highways and in rural areas. It may cause range anxiety and thoughtful trip planning. It’s also a factor on long stretches and hilly terrain where you have the car loaded to the max while running the AC to full. Some say the fuel savings make it worth the extra planning, while others say it adds stress that is totally unnecessary for road trips. It even debates whether the reduced boot space for the CNG tank would be a big luggage inconvenience on long trips or not. And it’s a hot topic for prospective buyers and auto enthusiasts alike, since it wraps up questions of practicality, economics, and lifestyle.
Absolutely not. Of course you don’t want to be worrying about getting to a CNG station when you’re on a road trip. Fine for city, but for longer distances, petrol and diesel is preferred.
With some careful planning of your routes I believe that it could work. If you are traveling a long distance, the fuel savings could be significant—maybe worth the hassle of locating CNG stations.
That just depends on where you’re traveling. It’s doable if you’re sticking to major highways and cities. However, you couldn't flick a switch and constantly be on the edge of running out of fuel for off the beaten path adventures.
It’s about a lot more than fuel. The CNG version will have a major headache with its reduced boot space for packing luggage. It's a no from me.
I actually think if it were used on long trips it would be amazing. Using CNG you could travel further for less. In addition, the stops required to refuel could provide an opportunity to break, and actually enjoy the journey as you go.
So reality check is that most of what people call long distance trips in India are less than 500km! With maybe one refuel, the Nexon CNG should do that fine. This isn't like we're going across continents.
On hilly roads when fully loaded, I'd be more worried about performance. More than looking for CNG stations, finding out how it struggles on ghats and while overtaking trucks is a bigger issue.
Without risk of sounding too cheesy, this could work well for regular routes. Knowing where the CNG stations are and driving frequently between two cities can save you a ton of money in the long run.
