Is the new Nissan Patrol Y63 a worthy successor to the previous ones?

However, the Nissan Patrol has a long history of being a ruggedly reliable and off road capable vehicle, particularly in the Middle East and Australia. The buzz around the new Y63 model has been about more luxurious features and modern design. Parts of the community say its utility is disappearing, while others state it's evolving and adapting. There is no basic cloth interior available on the new model, which also sports air suspension and a full digital dash. It's also much larger than any previous generation. This kind of design philosophy shift has raised questions among the Patrol enthusiasts of whether the new model has the soul of Patrol or is it just another luxury SUV?

It's a natural evolution, the Y63. It's more luxurious, yes, but that's what the market wants these days. But it still has the power and capability for off roading, just with more comfort. Naturally, you can't fault Nissan for giving people what they want.

Nah, they've ruined it. The Patrol was once a proper workhorse. It's just a mall crawler with a fancy badge now. Any day, give me a Y61 Super Safari over this new bling machine.

It's a mixed bag. The tech upgrades are awesome and most people getting new Patrols aren’t hardcore off roaders anyway. I miss the simplicity of the older models, however. Maybe they should provide a stripped down version for the purists?

People are overreacting, I believe. It's still got the core DNA — it's powerful, capable and built to last. It's more comfortable doesn't mean it can't handle the rough stuff. And the air suspension could even make its off road performance better.

I am a long time Patrol owner and I am disappointed. The Y63 wants to be a Range Rover, rather than sticking to what it was. I understand they have to modernize, but I think they’ve gone too far.
