Is the MG Comet roadworthy for Indian roads?
by Ashutoshover 1 year ago0 views7 comments
The talk around the MG Comet EV has centred around safety concerns, given how small the EV is, and how chaotic Indian roads can be. The small size of the vehicle, however, makes one wonder whether it can protect occupants in collisions with larger vehicles, an all too familiar feature of Indian streets. Further, its short wheelbase and small wheels make people debate if the Comet will item on highways or rougher roads. Its proponents say it's safer than it looks because of its advanced safety features and modern construction techniques, but skeptics worry about how it will actually perform in real world crash scenarios. This question also raises other questions regarding road safety in India, adequacy of current safety standards for micro-EVs and the tradeoff between vehicle size, efficiency and safety in urban environments.

No small car is 'safe' on Indian roads for the way people drive. The Comet at least has modern safety tech, which you can’t say for lots of small cars here.

It’s not just the car that makes it safe, it’s the driver as well. The Comet is small enough that you notice your surroundings more and drive more carefully. That's a safety advantage.

There’s a lot of work that MG has put into making the Comet safe. It has a strong frame, multiple airbags and ABS. In a way, it may be safer than many of the older, larger cars on the road.

It seems the Comet might work for slow city driving, but it wouldn't take highways or rough roads well. It's just not stable enough for those conditions.

Smaller, lighter cars can actually be safer in some situations, people forget. They're more maneuverable and less likely to have accidents that bigger cars can't. It's not all about size.

On Indian roads I would not feel safe in that tiny thing. It’s game over if you get hit by a truck or SUV. Something bigger and sturdier will have to do.

Initially I was worried about safety, but after driving it I'm pretty secure. It’s a solid feeling car, and the safety features are impressive for its size. And it's nimble enough to avoid accidents.
