Is the Mahindra XUV500 unreliable or is it just a myth?
The Mahindra XUV500 has been around for a while in India, and it’s been one of the more popular SUVs in the country. It’s durable according to some owners, but others have frequent issues with it. We are trying to answer this question from the real world experience of XUV500 owner and enthusiasts. Are the reliability concerns overblown, or is there something to them? What are the most common problems with it, and how do they stack up other SUVs in the same price range? Is the reliability model variant or model year specific? But let's dive into the experiences of long term owners and hear from both sides of the story to get a better view of the real reliability of XUV500.
I have had my XUV500 for more than 6 years now and it has been rock solid. It’s true, there were a few minor niggles at the beginning but nothing major. It's bulletproof engine and I've done multiple long trips with no problems. I think a lot of the unreliability rumors are from early models, or people who don’t maintain their cars properly.
I owned the first gen and the facelifted XUV500 and I can tell you the difference is huge. The electronics and suspension in early models proved to be more troublesome than they should have been. The facelift really did Mahindra justice. I have had my current 2018 model trouble free for 65,000 km.
The XUV500 isn’t Toyota level reliable, but it isn’t a disaster either. I have had mine for 4 years and yes, there have been a few issues, mostly small electrical gremlins. The core mechanicals are solid, but. It's not all about compromise, but it is all about managing expectations - you get a feature packed SUV at a competitive price, so compromises are to be expected.
I don't think the unreliability tag is fair. My XUV500 has more than 1.5 lakh km on the odo and it’s still going strong. Regular maintenance, as well as fixing small problems before they develop into big problems, are the keys. It’s had its niggles, sure, but what car hasn’t? I think for the price and features it’s pretty reliable.
I am a mechanic, having worked on several XUV500s, and can say it's a mixed bag. Generally speaking, the engine and transmission are rugged, but we see a lot of suspension components and some electrical systems that tend to recur. It’s not unreliable by any means, but it needs more attention than some of its competitors. These are cars that need regular maintenance.
