Is the Mahindra Supro School Bus really eco friendly?

Question

Vehicle choices for school transportation are becoming increasingly important from an environmental perspective. The Mahindra Supro School Bus is marketed as an eco friendly option, but is it really? On one hand, some say that it is more fuel efficient and produces lower emissions than older school buses; others say it's not green enough in today's climate crisis. The bus is diesel powered, which is cleaner than some options, but it's still a fossil fuel. Electric or CNG versions are discussed in terms of the sustainability of the vehicle. However, critics argue that that’s not true progress, it’s greenwashing. The point of contention is not only with the overall lifecycle emissions of the vehicle but also with the manufacturing process. Climate change education is increasingly becoming a part of schools, and environmentally conscious students and parents have started talking about the choice of school bus.

I drive one of these for a living and I can tell you that it does use less fuel than the old bus I used to drive. Right, that's gotta count for something. It's also easier to maneuver, so I sit in less idling traffic. I guess every little bit helps.

Last year, my school got these buses and they made such a big deal about how "green" these buses were. But come on guys, this is more like a PR stunt than the environment really caring. Instead of that, why not invest in some solar panels for the school?

@amar-jain · Answer

I’m an environmental science person and I think we’re not looking at the bigger picture. The Supro is not perfect, but it is encouraging more kids onto shared transport rather than individual cars. That’s a win for cutting overall emissions.

@neeraj-gup · Answer

Wait, that’s not how it works. Electric sounds great, but what is powering that electricity? It’s still coal power in many parts of India. At least we know the Supro is more fuel efficient than the bigger buses. That’s a step in the right direction.

@nimish-rai · Answer

To be honest, calling this thing 'eco friendly' is a stretch. It's better than those ancient smoke belching buses, but it's still running on diesel. If we really care about the environment we should be pushing for electric school buses.
