Is the lack of electronic aids on the KTM 390 Adventure X better for new riders to learn on?
The KTM 390 Adventure X does without some of the 390 Adventure's more advanced electronic aids, such as traction control and cornering ABS. This has caused riders to debate among themselves whether this stripped-down version is really a better learning tool for those new to adventure riding. Some say it teaches you better skills and instincts knowing how to learn to ride without that electronic help, but others say that gives you those extra skills or safety net that you would not have had otherwise. Talking points of the discussion include discussion on skill development, safety, and transition to more advanced riding techniques. In this question I am trying to understand the advantages and disadvantages of learning on an ‘analog’ bike (the 390 Adventure X) versus a more electronic version.
Absolutely! Without TC and cornering ABS, you learn to develop a better feel for the bike's limits. It’s the difference between learning to drive a manual or an automatic.
I disagree. There's a reason for those electronic aids. This allows new riders to concentrate on the basics without ever worrying about an unexpected loss of traction.
It's a double-edged sword. The X will teach you more but is also less forgiving of mistakes. It depends on how well an individual learns and his/her risk level.
I started on the X, and I like to learn without the aids. However, there were definitely some sketchy moments that I wished I had them.
Learning off-road skills, the X is great for that. Without traction control, you learn very quickly how to modulate the throttle in loose conditions.
I think starting without any electronic aids these days is overkill. The standard 390 Adventure is a good balance of learning opportunity and safety.
In fact, new riders are the ones who benefit from the lack of a TFT display. It frees up less distraction and more concentration on road feedback and the bike.
That depends on where you’re riding. The standard model is worth its safety features for mostly road use. The X is better for those into more off-road.
I first did it on a bike without aids and then on one with aids. I'm a better rider for having learned the hard way first, honestly.
The X is a great learning platform, but buy some crash protection. It’s bound to drop a few times while you figure things out.
