Is the KTM Duke 890 R an upgrade worth the upgrade from a 390 Duke?

The popular 390 Duke is where many riders begin their KTM journey, but the more experienced riders will often start thinking about upgrading from the 390 to the more powerful 890 R. This is a huge performance and technology upgrade and a price jump to match. The 890 R features triple the power output, advanced electronics, and premium components, including fully adjustable WP APEX suspension. But there's also a steeper learning curve and higher maintenance costs. Riders must decide whether the increased performance delivers enough of a thrill for them to warrant the practical consideration of their skill level, intended use (commuting vs. track days), and budget for purchase and upkeep. Ultimately, it's down to personal riding goals and how one sees the development of his or her riding as it pertains to what the 890 R can bring to the table.

Absolutely! The 390 is a beast compared to the 890 R. The concept is simple; it feels like going from a bicycle to a rocket ship.

That depends on how skilled you are. If you are still new to riding, you might not be able to handle the jump safely.

I upgraded and am not regretting it. The 890 R is so much more versatile, great for commuting and weekend fun.

I honestly believe that it's overkill for most riders. There’s plenty of bike for the street in the 390, and you’re not going to be using the 890’s full potential.

The tech on the 890 R is worth it all on its own. It's a whole different experience with a quickshifter, lean-sensitive ABS, and multiple ride modes.

If you can afford it, I'd say go for it, but be prepared to pay more for maintenance and more often for service.

Why not a standard 890 Duke? It's somewhere in between the 390 and R versions.

I did the jump, and if you’re planning on doing track days, I would say it’s worth it. It may be excessive for pure street riding.
