Is the KTM 990 SMT the ultimate do-it-all bike?

by geeta kumariover 1 year ago0 views7 comments
Riders praise the KTM 990 SMT as a versatile machine—one they can use to ride in all sorts of different ways and conditions. Most praised for its powerful V-twin, comfy ergonomics, and ably suspension. Others say it’s the perfect blend of sportbike and adventure tourer, which can slice canyons, commute, and even tackle light off-road duties. Others claim it’s a jack of all trades and master of none, not having the specialization of a purpose-built bike. In this article, we will see if the 990 SMT is really the ultimate do-it-all motorcycle or just overhyped nostalgia.

My SMT is great, but there are some areas where it's not great at. It's not a great touring range, and it's too heavy to take serious off-roading. But it’s not the ultimate all-rounder; it’s an awesome bike.

For good reason, the 990 SMT is a cult classic. By today’s standards, it’s not perfect, but its combination of power, handling, and versatility is still impressive. It's pretty damn close to the ultimate do-it-all bike.

That depends on your definition of "do it all." The SMT is hard to beat if you are looking to have a bike that covers sporty riding and light touring. If you want serious off-road capability or long-distance comfort, there are better options.

For its time, definitely. However, the 990 SMT is now a long time ago in motorcycle terms. By today's standards, I'd argue something like the current KTM 890 Adventure R is a more capable all-rounder.

It's one of the best all-rounders, I'd say, but the ultimate is a stretch. Much the same kind of versatility is offered by bikes like the Multistrada or S1000XR, albeit with more modern features.

Not quite perfect, but close. Not for everyone, though; with no traction control or cornering ABS, some riders do not like it. Still an awesome bike, though!

Absolutely! I’ve had my 990 SMT for years, and it’s done everything I’ve asked of it. Weekend twisties, some light trail riding, and of course, commuting. It’s the Swiss Army knife of motorcycles.
