Is the KTM 990 Adventure still relevant in 2016’s ADV market?

However, when the KTM 990 Adventure came out, it was a bike that many adventure riders liked, and it’s been a while since its release, so some might ask if it can still hold its own. That reputation of the 990 Adventure as a raw, analog experience in a world of increasingly digital bikes holds true. It’s known for its powerful V-twin engine, capable off-road performance, and minimalist approach to rider aids. While it doesn’t have some modern features like advanced electronics, trench control, and rider modes that are seen on newer ADV cycles, it is capable of taking just about anything you throw at it. It raises questions as to the practicality and appeal of it compared to other more recent offerings. Is a 990 Adventure a hidden gem because of its simplicity and mechanical purity, or do modern alternatives reign supreme?

Absolutely! Off-road, the 990 Adventure is still a beast. Okay, it doesn’t have all the fancy electronics, but that’s just part of the fun. But you actually have to know how to ride.

I'd say it's outdated. ADV bikes are so much more comfortable, safe, and performant than they used to be in the modern world. For me, lack of rider aids is a deal breaker.

That depends on what you’re looking for. For a pure, analog riding experience, it would be difficult to top the 990. If you need the latest tech, look elsewhere, however.

I've had a 990 and newer 1290. The 990 feels more connected to the road, but the 1290 is easier to live with day to day.

If you’re willing to wrench on it yourself, the 990 is still relevant. But parts are getting harder to find.

However, if you're already an experienced rider, the 990 is a dream. Modern bikes for newer ADV riders may be more forgiving and user-friendly.

But I think that it's still relevant as a second bike. Purists will love it for a raw experience at weekends.
