Is the KTM 690 SMC-R too much bike for a beginner?

A supermoto fan, the KTM 690 SMC R is famous for its powerful single-cylinder engine and lightweight design. Yet, its performance capabilities have raised questions as to whether it is right for new riders to motorcycle. Its power-to-weight ratio and advanced electronics encourage some to say it’s easy to use for beginners, while others feel its aggressive nature and twitchy throttle response would be too much. This discussion also depends upon factors such as the rider’s size, previous experience riding other motorized vehicles, or personal maturity. On top of all this, having the option to both maintain a bike and modify it further is another layer to the beginner friendliness discussion.

Why not, if you can afford it and you want to learn? All you need is frame sliders and be prepared to replace some parts.

The issue isn’t the power; it’s the maintenance. These bikes require so much upkeep that a beginner might not be ready for it.

For tall beginners, it’s actually not bad. It has a seat height that gives you confidence and is manageable power if you're careful.

I had started on one and dropped it within a week. Expensive mistake. I wish I’d gone for something cheaper to learn on.

Nah, start smaller. The 690 is great, but learn the basics on something a little more forgiving first.

But if you are trained properly, then it's fine. If you take a course, practice in parking lots, you will be golden.

I'd say it's too much. If you're not experienced, the false neutral issue alone can get you.

It depends on the person. If you can control yourself and are mature, you can do it. You gotta respect the power, but...

Are you kidding? The thing is a wheelie machine. That’s no way to start a newbie. Get a 300 or something first.

Absolutely not! I started on a 690 and it is definitely the best decision I've ever made. It’s super forgiving because of the electronics package.
