Is the KTM 1390 Super Duke R’s power increase over the 1290 worth the upgrade?

The KTM 1390 Super Duke R is the evolution of the already potent 1290 model, with a larger displacement engine and an increase in power output. Nevertheless, the former 1290 Super Duke R was already a beast of overwhelming power and torque, and some were wondering whether the upgrade to the 1390 is really necessary or noticeable in real-world riding. It also costs more and could be more expensive to run. In fact, some think that the 1390s' improvements in electronics and chassis refinements might be more important than the power bump. Some say more power is always welcome in the world of hyper naked bikes, even if it’s not always possible to use on public roads. But this debate raises broader questions about the ongoing power race in the motorcycle industry and whether we are getting to the point where there is no practical or enjoyable limit to two wheels.

I am not tempted by the 1390 as a 1290 owner. These bikes are already at the edge of what's usable. I’d rather have the money go to upgrades or track days.

The real value of the 1390, I think, is as a package. The improved suspension and electronics seal the deal, but the power bump is nice.

The 1390 is worthy of an upgrade for track use. On the street, it's overkill. Unless you're into track junk, save your money.

The increase in power in the 1390s is subtle, but you can sense it at the top end. It’s the 1290 with a double shot of espresso.

I stuck with my 1290. The 1390 is impressive, but at this level diminishing returns set in. I'd already got more bikes than I can really use.

More power is always better! It’s nice to have it around even if you can’t use it all the time. The 1390 is a beast!

I went from a 1290 to a 1390, and the power difference is really not that noticeable on the street. What makes it worthwhile is the refinements in electronics and handling.
