Is the KTM 1390 Super Duke R’s power increase over the 1290 worth the upgrade?
The KTM 1390 Super Duke R is the evolution of the already potent 1290 model, with a larger displacement engine and an increase in power output. Nevertheless, the former 1290 Super Duke R was already a beast of overwhelming power and torque, and some were wondering whether the upgrade to the 1390 is really necessary or noticeable in real-world riding. It also costs more and could be more expensive to run. In fact, some think that the 1390s' improvements in electronics and chassis refinements might be more important than the power bump. Some say more power is always welcome in the world of hyper naked bikes, even if it’s not always possible to use on public roads. But this debate raises broader questions about the ongoing power race in the motorcycle industry and whether we are getting to the point where there is no practical or enjoyable limit to two wheels.
I went from a 1290 to a 1390, and the power difference is really not that noticeable on the street. What makes it worthwhile is the refinements in electronics and handling.
