Is the Kia Sportage too soft a ride for enthusiastic driving?
Compared to Hyundai Tucson, the Kia Sportage as quite a comfortable ride and is perfect vehicle to use for daily commuting and long trips. But some drivers who enjoy a more involving driving experience have said the suspension might be a little too soft, resulting in a fair amount of body roll in corners and less of a connected feel to the road. Such discussions have fueled debates regarding whether Kia has gone too far toward comfort at the expense of sportier handling, especially since there's a "Sport" in the car's name. So how does this affect the overall driving experience and is it a big selling point?
I actually really like how the Sportage rides. But it's comfortable as a daily driver, which is what most people use it for. In that case, buy a hot hatch or sports sedan if you want something sporty. It’s a family crossover, and it does that well.
If you're expecting anything remotely sporty the soft suspension is certainly a letdown. It feels disconnected from the road and there’s way too much body roll for my liking. A sport tuned suspension should be offered by Kia.
I believe it hits that middle ground. It's not a boat, but it's not a sports car. It’s great for long trips and if you put it in Sport mode it tightens up enough for some fun on backroads. Not much more you can expect from a crossover.
Being someone who switched from a sportier car I thought the Sportage would feel too soft. Honestly, I've learned to like the comfort. It really makes my commute much more pleasant. How many of us are really pushing our family SUVs to the limit anyway, though?
It is too soft a ride for my taste. It’s not a sports car, I get that, but in crossovers, it’s on the softer side of the spectrum. What I wish is that Kia had found some middle ground between the two, a bit more engagement without too much comfort being lost.
