Is the Kia Forte too slow for enthusiasts?

For driving enthusiasts, the Kia Forte is often heavily derided for its relatively anemic performance, especially in the base and mid range trims. The car is intended for efficient, comfortable daily driving, but some buyers and owners argue whether it’s exciting enough behind the wheel. Forte’s acceleration, handling and all around driving dynamics often come up in whether Forte is a better car than others in compact car segment as sportier alternatives. It's sometimes suggested that the GT trim, with its more powerful engine and sport tuned suspension, is the answer, but if it really does scratch the itches of performance oriented drivers or if it's just a compromise is questionable. The central question here is whether affordable compact cars really should be either practical and efficient or fun to drive.

It's fine for a daily driver. Not all cars have to be sports cars. For what the Forte is, it does its job pretty well.

I find it boring to drive. If only I had gone for something a little more pep, like a Mazda3 or a Civic Si.

Surprisingly, the GT trim was. It's no hot hatch, but it's fun on backroads.

Those who were looking for Porsche performance out of a budget compact are not going to be happy.

So I added a cold air intake and a tune to my Forte. It makes it way more enjoyable to drive without breaking the bank.

It's all about expectations. For commuting purposes, or short trips over the weekend, the Forte's performance is fine.

I drove the base model and GT back to back. It’s night and day difference. Ultimately, if you want performance, you're going to want to go for the GT.
