Is the Hyundai Aura a glorified taxi or a legit family car?
In many cities, the Hyundai Aura has become famous for being a popular taxi service. It is very compact, fuel efficient and priced affordably to attract fleet operators. This association, however, has made some wonder if the Aura is a suitable personal family vehicle. Lots of people have debated its styling, interior quality and value proposition relative to other compact sedans. Others say its unjust stigma for a practical, well equipped car, while some argue that the taxi image affects resale value and social status. It’s a question that covers perception, practicality and whether or not the Aura can straddle both commercial and personal markets.
Definitely more than a taxi! I’ve had an Aura for two years now and it’s been great for my family. It's spacious enough for four adults, there's decent boot space and the features on the higher trims are pretty good. You see a lot of them as taxis, but that’s because they’re reliable and efficient. If you are looking for a solid, affordable family car, don’t let the taxi image put you off.
The Aura is screaming “taxi” from a mile away, let’s be real. The fact that every other cab on the road is an Aura and that boxy design just kills any appeal as a personal car. If you want a compact sedan that doesn’t make you look like an off duty Uber driver, you’re better off with something like a Maruti Dzire or Honda Amaze.
It depends, I think, on the variant you choose. Base models are pretty barebones and taxi like, but top end versions with alloys, chrome accents and better interiors can actually look quite nice. Everything is determined by how you spec it out. And the taxi association makes parts cheap and readily available, which is a big plus for long term ownership.
I test drove the Aura and its competitors and I'd say it's a mixed bag. The 1.0 turbo engine is surprisingly peppy and the Aura has a surprisingly good ride quality. The interior is a bit cheap compared to rivals and that taxi image is hard to shake. The car is good, but for more you can do better.
Why does everyone harp on the taxi thing? The Aura is a damn good tool and a car is a tool. It's great mileage, easy to drive around the city, and they have a great service network. Who cares if taxi fleets like it? It just proves its reliability. Be practical, not image oriented.
