Is the hassle worth it importing a JDM HiAce over buying a domestic van?

If you live in a country where the Toyota HiAce (JDM) was not sold you may find that importing one has become quite the popular thing to do among enthusiasts. Unique features, right hand drive configuration and perceived superior build quality are typically the appeal. That said, bringing a JDM vehicle in is no walk in the park, involving resolving import regulations, possibly encountering shipping back orders and requests for unfamiliar paperwork. When the van does show up, owners may be left struggling to find parts, or mechanics who know how to work on JDM specific pieces. On the flip side, JDM HiAces often arrive with options not found in domestic models: diesel engine or special trim levels. A subject of ongoing debate in van life and automotive communities is whether the unique characteristics and possible advantages of a JDM HiAce outweigh the trouble and possible headaches of importing and maintaining one.

Totally worth it! And the JDM models have some awesome features that you just can’t get domestically. Plus, they're just cooler.

Not worth the headache. Good luck if something breaks down in the middle of nowhere, and finding parts is a nightmare.

It depends on where you live. If you live in a city with a decent JDM scene, go for it. If not, stick to domestic.

I imported one and regret it. Quickly the novelty wore off and now I'm left with a van that's expensive to maintain.

For me, it was worth it. The import process alone was made worth it by the diesel engine option.

If you like to DIY and enjoy a challenge, go for it. If you just want a work van that works, go with what you have locally.

My JDM HiAce is a fantastic vehicle, but you will need to learn. It’s not for everyone, but it’s great for enthusiasts.
