Is the FZ8 a good touring platform?

Though designed to be a naked sportbike, the Yamaha FZ8 has earned a reputation among some riders as a capable sport-tourer. As a result, its suitability for long distance rides and multi day trips has been debated. Its comfortable ergonomics and smooth engine, along with decent wind protection (with aftermarket screens) is what proponents argue makes it a great all rounder. Its lack of factory luggage options and relatively small fuel tank are drawbacks for serious touring, say the critics. The talk is usually about ways to improve the FZ8 as a tourer, with aftermarket seats, luggage solutions, and ergonomics changes being a topic that comes up often. The FZ8 is compared to purpose built sport tourers and riders discuss if the FZ8's versatility makes it a better option for those who want one bike that can do it all. There were plenty of personal experiences with long trips on the FZ8 that are shared, with its strong and weak points as a touring platform.

With the right mods it’s a fantastic tourer. Some hard luggage, a better seat, and a taller windscreen transform it.

It's a great all-rounder. Tourable, but still fun in the twisties. Don't expect it to be a Gold Wing, just don't.

It is a great touring engine. It is smooth, has plenty of power and good fuel economy when you're cruising.

I would say it's more of a sport bike that occasionally can do some long trip. If you were doing serious touring you'd be looking for more wind protection and capacity for luggage.

It's hard to beat for the price. It’s not as feature packed as some dedicated tourers, but it is comfortable and reliable.

It’s alright but it’s not the best. The fuel tank is small so you need to stop all the time, and that gets really annoying when you're on long rides.

I've done 1000+ mile trips on the FZ8 and it's been great. All you need is a little windscreen and soft luggage and you are good to go.

It’s decent for short trips, but not great for really long hauls. On highways, there is a lack of wind protection.

In fact, it’s surprisingly good for touring. You can sit upright for hours without feeling sore.
