Is the FZ1 Fazer better as a sport bike or as a tourer?

by @sukhmandeepover 1 year ago0 views10 answers
The Yamaha FZ1 Fazer sits somewhere between sport bike and sport tourer, and the argument over its real nature and best use continues. But others love its versatility, claiming it can eat up highway miles and carve canyons in the same day. Some say it's a jack of all trades, but a master of none—behind sport bikes in performance, and lacking the comfort of true tourers. Comparison to other bikes in both categories is also discussed as well as personal anecdotes about how owners use their FZ1s. Riders report back on modifications that move the bike further in one or the other direction, from touring with luggage to swapping suspension parts for a sportier ride.

The FZ1 is a beautiful bike because it can be whatever you want it to be. It’s empty, and you can fill it with the riding style you want it to be.

It's all based on how you configured it. Using some suspension work and sticky tires, it can run with sport bikes. A taller windscreen and bags make a great tourer.

I would say it’s 60% sport bike and 40% tourer. It's not quite as sporty as a VFR but not as squashed as a GSX R.

For me, it's a better tourer. It’s great for eating up miles thanks to upright ergonomics and a smooth engine. A pure sport bike is not as sharp in the twisties.

This is the ultimate do it all bike. From commuting to 1000 mile weekends to track days I've done it all on mine. Versatility is its strength.

I think it’s more sporty. It’s more aggressive in the seating position and power delivery than most tourers.

It's too heavy as a sport bike, and the suspension is too soft. It’s not a tourer, it doesn’t have luggage options and the fuel range could be better. It's stuck in the middle.

It's a perfect 50/50 split. That’s what I like about it so much. With the same bike you can do track days and cross country trips.

Mine is great for touring and it's what I use mine for. You can go for days on it if you throw some soft bags on it. The wind protection is also decent fairing.

This is definitely a sport bike with touring capabilities. It feels too rowdy to be a relaxed tourer, but is comfortable enough to spend long days in the saddle.
