Is the Dodge Viper as dangerous to drive as people say it is?

Dodge Viper is known as a handful to drive, many have even called it a 'widow maker' due to a powerful engine, the lack of driver aids and a tendency for snap oversteer. It’s just misunderstood, say some, and needs to be handled with skill, while others insist it’s really treacherous even for experienced drivers. The big question is often whether the Viper’s challenging nature is a feature or a bug, or simply if modern safety technology would kill the car’s raw, analog appeal. On roads and tracks, owners and enthusiasts often discuss their experiences taming the Viper and tips, or close calls, on the road. Over the years, the car's notoriety has only made it more mystifying to gearheads, who love to argue about it.

If you respect it, it’s not dangerous. It's got a ton of power, and no nannies, sure, but that's what makes it fun. All you have to do is be smooth with the inputs and not be an idiot with the throttle.

They're definitely tricky, if you've ever driven one. If you’re not ready, it turns on so suddenly that you can get caught off guard. That's part of the appeal, though, because it's a real driver's car.

The danger is overhyped, I think. Traction is a huge difference today with modern tires. The early ones on pizza cutters were sketchy, but a Gen 5 on good rubber is totally manageble.

It's all relative. It's dangerous, sure, compared to a Miata. Not to old muscle cars with drum brakes and bias ply tires? The Viper is a pussycat.

It is real danger, but that is what makes it special. Not all cars need to be idiot proof. The Viper is something that demands respect, and skill, and that's something that you don't see very often these days.

It's more unforgiving than dangerous, I'd say. If you make a mistake in a Civic, you might spin. In a Viper, make a mistake and you’re in the wall. Big difference.

People exaggerate. I drove a Gen 2 for years daily with zero issues. Turn off the traction control unless you know what you're doing, but you'll be fine otherwise.
