Is the Discover 125 Drum Brake braking system as inadequate as some riders say it is?
The Bajaj Discover 125 Drum Brake braking system has been a hot topic for riders. Don't get me wrong, some users believe that the drum brakes work fine in city riding but others assert that they are horribly inadequate, especially for emergency or wet situation. The debate about safety has kicked off with some riders supporting the inclusion of disc brakes as a standard feature. Defenders of the drum brake setup argue that it’s simpler and has lower maintenance costs, while being appropriate for the typical commute. But critics say the potential safety benefits of disc brakes outweigh the advantages. Brake fade on long descents gets a mention, as does the effect riding style can have on braking performance and whether drum brakes are outdated technology in modern traffic conditions. Riders even share DIY tips on how to improve braking performance, while others think that by doing proper maintenance you will get the most out of the stock system.
If you know how to use them correctly, the drum brakes work fine. Even in heavy rain, I’ve never had an issue. The big thing is early anticipation and early braking.
They're definitely inadequate. I've had some scary moments in emergency type situations. A disc brake option, at least on the front, is what Bajaj really needs to offer.
It's a trade-off. Cheaper to maintain and less likely to be damaged, drum brakes are the type of brakes. For day to day commuting they are good enough. But yeah, more confidence would be nice, and discs would be nice to have.
The drum brakes aren't the problem, people don't take care of them. They work great if you keep them adjusted and clean. They'll suck if you neglect them.
I upgraded to a front disc brake, and the difference is night and day. Best mod I've done. If you can afford it, it’s definitely worth it for the extra safety.
For a 125cc commuter, drum brakes are just fine. It’s not realistic for people to expect sportbike level braking. For its intended purpose, it stops well enough.
It's more the tires than the drums that are inadequate. I swapped to better rubber and the braking was much improved. Good tires make a huge difference.
