Is the CRF250L a better adventure riding bike than the legendary XR650L?

For decades, the Honda XR650L has been a staple of the dual sport world, providing simplicity, reliability and off road capability. While currently lacking the power, the CRF250L is a more modern design with fuel injection, is lighter and better geared for the majority of riders to handle. This often sparks debates among adventure riders regarding the trade off between power and weight, old school simplicity vs modern technology and which bike is better suited to long distance adventure riding. Riders discussing these two bikes do so considering factors such as fuel range, comfort, parts availability in a remote area, and just overall durability.

On paper the XR650L might be better for adventure riding but the CRF250L does have one big advantage – you can actually find them used for decent money. You won't find a clean XR650L for under $5k these days. Sometimes the best adventure bike is the one you can afford.

Most of us aren’t doing hardcore expeditions here. If you’re the average weekend warrior who wants to take a look at some dirt roads and camp, the CRF250L is plenty of bike. It’s easier to handle, cheaper to maintain, and still plenty capable.

I would say that if you have the choice between the two, the XR650L is better for tall riders and for those who want an off road machine. The CRF250L is a better bike for shorter riders and more on road riding. Both are capable, just in different ways.

People romanticize the XR650L too much, I think. It's a legend, and it's also a dinosaur. Less power, but ABS (which you can turn off) and better ergonomics for long rides makes the CRF250L a good option. Sometimes less is more.

That really depends on your definition of 'adventure riding'. If you are talking about crossing the Sahara, yeah, maybe the XR650L is better. The CRF250L is designed for exploring backroads and moderate trails but with the occasional highway stretch. The bike is all about matching it to your adventure style.

I have to disagree, because I’ve done a 3,000 mile trip on a CRF250L. It makes it so much lighter weight and so much more manageable in tight spots and because it fuel injected it runs perfectly at any altitude. And better fuel economy means you can go farther on a tank of gas.

I've ridden both and for adventure riding, the XR650L any day. That thumper engine is a bulletproof engine and it has enough power to get you and your gear through anything. Comparatively, the CRF250L feels underpowered, especially if you’ve taken it off on a fully loaded shopping trip to the store and back.
