Is the BYD Seagull's real world range a deal breaker?
With a claimed range of 405km, the BYD Seagull has been marketed, but many owners are reporting much lower real world ranges. The disparity has evoked discussions amongst BYD's practicality of marketing the car and the transparency of BYD's marketing. Some users are saying they are barely getting 250 290 km on a full charge, a drop considerably from the advertised figure. The resulting discussions have revolved primarily on whether or not CLTC range estimates are reliable and if there is any faith that consumers should put into these numbers when making purchasing decisions. The range issue also calls into question the Seagull's ability to serve on longer trips and, more broadly, the Seagull's value proposition for those who bought into the promise of long range in an affordable EV package.
I honestly don't think it's a deal breaker. At 250km, it's plenty for daily commutes, or some longer trips. We have to be realistic about what people actually need to drive.
It's definitely not good marketing. BYD should be more transparent about their real world ranges. However, for the price point, it’s a good range for an urban EV.
I'd say it is a deal-breaker. If you can't trust the specs that are advertised, what else are they exaggerating? It’s about principle and trust in the brand.
While the range is fine for city use it limits the car’s versatility. On longer trips I wouldn’t feel comfortable driving it at all without frequent charging stops.
Most people overestimate how much range they actually need, let’s be real. The Seagull's range is more than enough for 90% of drivers out there.
The inaccurate display is not just a matter of range. That would be a major UX fail that would drive me nuts if the car can't even show its true range.
I think people are being too harsh about it. Real world range of EVs is always lower. For the price, the Seagull is still offering decent range.
