Is the BYD eMAX 7 worth the price tag considering its features, and the electric powertrain?

BYD eMAX 7 enters India at a starting price of Rs 26.90 lakh, slotting in the premium MPV segment. Thus, competing with popular models Toyota Innova Crysta and Kia Carnival, this pricing strategy is imperative for Hero. The eMAX 7 has the benefit of an all electric powertrain with a 530 km range and also features a 12.8 inch rotating touchscreen, ventilated front seats and Level 2 ADAS. But electric vehicles are always subjected to close scrutiny as to whether they make value proposition in a price sensitive market like India. Buyers could compare the upfront cost to the traditional ICE vehicles, against the long term savings for fuel and maintenance both. Besides, the BYD brand is new to India and the present charging infrastructure is going to play a major role in how people perceive the value of the eMAX 7. Is too steep a premium being charged on the technology and features on offer or is the premium justified?

Absolutely justified! It's cutting edge EV tech, a huge range and premium features. The price doesn’t seem crazy when you compare it to the top end Innova Crysta and add in the long term fuel savings.

No way. What it offers is way too expensive. Okay, it's electric, but at that price you're competing with luxury brands. The fact is, BYD doesn't have the brand value to command that kind of premium in India.

For early adopters and tech enthusiasts I think it's reasonably priced. It's still too expensive for the average MPV buyer looking for a family car. To really compete in the mass market they need to bring the price down.

It may seem expensive now but we have to look at the total cost of ownership. Running costs are lower and if you can get government incentives on EVs it can work out cheaper in long run than a similar ICE vehicle.

At that price it's a tough sell. And they are asking people to pay a premium for an unproven brand in India irrespective of their global reputation. However, they should have come in with more aggressive pricing strategy to get market share.
