Is the BYD Dolphin’s slower DC charging speed impractical for road trips?

by Ashutoshover 1 year ago0 views7 comments
EV enthusiasts have been debating the maximum DC fast charging speed of 80 kW on the BYD Dolphin. That charging rate is significantly slower than what some competitors in its class can deliver, which can charge at speeds of 120 kW or faster. A lot of the discussion is centered around the feasibility of using the Dolphin for long distance travel, where you need to make frequent and perhaps longer charge stops. A few say that the charging speed is sufficient for everyday use and for short trips, but others insist that it greatly influences versatility of the car. It also discusses trade offs between battery longevity, charging speed and cost, as well as where charging infrastructure is currently at in different regions.

I’ve done road trips in the Dolphin before and it’s not ideal, but it’s doable. All you have to do is pay a little more attention to how you plan your stops.

For the price point, something had to give, and it's definitely a compromise. I’m willing to pay a bit more for a slower charging car I don’t use much, rather than a cheaper car with faster charging I rarely use.

If I get more longevity in the battery, I’d rather have a slower charge speed. LFP batteries are supposed to last forever and I think the slow charging helps that.

Charging speed is fine, but there is simply not enough infrastructure to charge in many places. If you fix that, 80 kW becomes a much less of a problem.

It's all about perspective. I came from a first gen Leaf, 80 kW feels lightning fast! And it’s better for the battery long term to charge a little bit slower.

I believe that is a big disadvantage. If you are spending this much on an EV, you would like the flexibility to go farther without having to stop so much. It's a dealbreaker for me.

For most people, it’s not a big deal. Do you really do it that often? 80 kW is plenty fast for daily use and weekend getaways.
