Is the body on frame construction of Scorpio – N outdated vis a vis modern monocoque SUVs?

Traditionally, body-on-frame construction is identified with ruggedness and durability, and that's what the Mahindra Scorpio-N uses. In off road vehicles and pickup trucks this design is often preferred. But many of today's modern SUVs have gone to monocoque or unibody construction, which generally offers better on road handling, fuel efficiency, and space utilization. This has led to debate among some that Scorpio N isn’t as modern or refined in construction when pitted against monocoque, here, competitors. There are those who say that the body on frame design results in poorer on road comfort and handling, and others who feel it offers better durability and off road capability. The debate usually centers around whether the advantages of this traditional construction are worth the associated drawbacks in day to day use, particularly for buyers who spend most of their time in their SUV in urban areas.

In fact, I like body on frame construction. If something goes wrong, it's easier and cheaper to repair, which is good for long term ownership.

It's all about perspective. It might feel outdated if you’re coming from a sedan. However, if you have driven older SUVs, you will appreciate that the Scorpio-N is quite refined for a body on frame vehicle.

I believe Mahindra has managed the pros and cons well. The new Scorpio N is a better handling car than the old one, and still has the benefits of a body on frame.

What makes the Scorpio-N special is the body on frame. It’s not a car like crossover but it’s not trying to be one. If you want that, then buy something else. This is for the people who really want a proper, tough SUV.

As a city driver I find the body on frame construction a bit overkill. It helps the car feels heavier, less agile in traffic. For daily use, I’d like a monocoque.

It's definitely a trade-off. While the Scorpio-N is more rugged, you do notice the difference in handling over something like the XUV700. It is not outdated, it is just different.

I have driven both, and I really must say I don't feel that the Scorpio-N is outdated. I like the solid, planted feel of a body on frame over some floaty monocoques.
