Is the Avenger 200’s performance enough for highway rides?
For riders who tour or have to commute long distances, highway performance is a big consideration. With its cruiser styling and not inconsiderable displacement, the Avenger 200 tends to generate a lot of discussion about its suitability for long highway use. This ranges from top speed, to high speed stability, overtaking ability, and stress on the engine when at sustained high RPMs. Also, the bike's aerodynamics, wind protection, and highway speed fuel efficiency are important. The Avenger 200 is perfectly capable of highway cruising as some riders will attest, but others feel it’s underpowered for such use. This topic usually brings in conversations about what would be the perfect engine size for highway cruising in India and should Bajaj offer a bigger engine option for the Avenger?
I've done a number of highway trips with my Avenger 200 and it's no problem. It’s not a speed demon, but it cruises nicely at 80-90 km/h.
On the highway, the Avenger 200 feels a tad underpowered, and especially so when fully loaded or ridden with a pillion. A big difference is made by a 250cc or 300cc engine.
Highway riding is adequate, but only if you're not in a hurry. It can be difficult to overtake, and on inclines you really feel the lack of power.
I think it’s more about expectations. The Avenger 200 is a good choice if you’re after a relaxed cruise. If you want something that can handle bigger bikes, you might be disappointed.
As for the bike, highways are fine, but when it comes to engine power, it’s not lacking, it’s the lack of wind protection that’s a bigger issue. It makes a world of difference having a good windscreen.
As far as Indian highways are concerned, the Avenger 200 is more than up to task. Not everyone wants to or needs to cruise at 120+ km/h.
The sweet spot that I’ve found is between 70–80 km/h. It's comfortable, efficient, and not strained at those speeds.
