Is the Alto K10 a good car for new drivers?

Compact, precise and affordable, the Alto K10 is often being highly recommended as a first car for the new drivers. For those just getting behind the wheel, its simple design and easy to use controls may not be so intimidating. But it's too basic and too small for some, who say it lacks advanced safety features and is not large or visible enough for inexperienced drivers to be as safe as they might be with more sophisticated safety technologies and a larger, more prominent presence on the road. The discussion often revolves around how affordable, practical and safe new drivers can be. In addition, discussions are encompassed on if the skills learnt on such a basic car are applicable to driving other vehicles that are larger and more powerful in the future.

It's perfect for newbies! Easy to park, small and forgiving to drive. Also, you'll cry less when you scratch it than you would in a nicer car.

I would suggest you go for something a little bigger. On highways with all those massive SUVs around, the K10 is so tiny, it can be nerve wracking. If your kid needs to build confidence, a Swift or i20 might be a better bet.

It's a great learner's car. New drivers are less likely to get in to trouble, because there’s a lack of power, and it’s simple enough to concentrate on mastering the basics.

Absolutely not. All the safety features new drivers can get, they need. These days the basic kit of the K10 just doesn't cut it. You'll spend a little more, but get something with better crash protection and stability control.

That depends on where you are driving. For city use, it's brilliant. If you have to do a lot of highway miles you might want something with a little more oomph and stability, but if you don’t it’s a lot of fun.

I did my learning on a K10 and I'm happy I did. Because I couldn't rely on fancy assists, it made me a better driver. You learn to really feel the road and the car.

Why not buy a used car from a segment above? You can get a 3-4 year old Swift or i10 for K10 money which will have better features and safety.
