Is the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione too good to be true?

The Italian marque hailed a stunning return to form with the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione in 2007. Soon, with its gorgeous design and Ferrari derived V8 engine, and limited production run of 500 units, it became a hot collectible. But some critics say its driving dynamics don't match up with its looks and it's closer to a grand tourer than a true sports car. Others say whether its astronomical price tag and its exclusive availability render it less of a great car and more a status symbol. In this feature, we take a look at various angles on the 8C Competizione's legendary status, or lack thereof, and determine whether it is more style than substance.

Overrated? No way! The 8C is a work of art that rolls. Have you seen those curves? It's like automotive porn.

I'd say it's a bit overrated. It sure does look amazing, but I’ve heard the driving experience doesn’t quite live up to the looks.

If you view it as a grand tourer, not a pure sports car, it’s not overrated. What it was built to do, it does it great: look good and cruise in style.

Definitely overrated. You could get a much better performing car for that price. It's all show and no go.

People miss the point, I think. The 8C was never intended to be a track monster. It’s a sculpture that rolls and has a wonderful engine, incidentally. It's perfectly rated in that context.

Appropriately enough, it's rated as a collector's item. As a driver's car, maybe a bit overrated. But man, that sound...

It's both overrated and underrated. Underperforming, but hugely important to Alfa's brand revival.

I'd say it's fairly rated. It’s not perfect, but it’s a special car, which marks a special moment for Alfa Romeo. Plus, it's drop-dead gorgeous.

Overrated for sure. It's a reskinned Maserati with a hefty price tag. You’re not paying for superiority, you’re paying for exclusivity.

If you're expecting it to be something it's not, then it's only overrated. It's a spot on stylish GT with a glorious engine note.
