Is the 7 seater WagonR safe with the full load of passengers?

Any family vehicle has to be safe and the 7-seater WagonR has caused a great deal of debate over this. With such compact dimensions, it’s hard to imagine how the car could protect all occupants in a crash, and even more difficult to imagine how the third row would fare in a collision. The critics say the addition of extra seats will degrade the structural integrity of the vehicle whereas the supporters claim that Maruti has strengthened the chassis for accommodating such changes. Also discussed are how well airbags and ABS work when the car is fully loaded. Others fear the car could be damaged when performing emergency maneuvers, such as evasive driving, with seven passengers on board. The passive side of the debate on safety features is also wide, relating to third row seat size and location, all seat belt usage possibilities for all passengers, and the crunchy factor of driver visibility with all seats in use. Road conditions in India and long family trips make this question of safety particularly pertinent.

It's reasonably safe for city use, I think. If Maruti wouldn't release it, it must have met safety standards. Common sense will do, though — don't overload it, and perhaps don't take it on long highway trips with a full load.

Are you kidding? It’s a disaster waiting to happen cramming seven people into a car that small. The crumple zones have to be small, and I can't imagine that the third row has any real protection in a rear end collision.

It's all relative. How safe is it compared to a Volvo XC90? Of course not. It's a big step up, however, compared to people who cram into auto rickshaws or onto motorcycles. It is about safety within a budget.

I’ve done some research on the safety features and they seem ok on paper. I'm skeptical how they would perform in a real crash with full load. Honestly, I’d feel safer in a larger vehicle.

Come on, safety in India isn’t just about car, it’s also about defensive driving. If kept well and driven carefully, the 7 seater WagonR can be good as family use car.
