Is the 7 seater WagonR a gimmick or does it actually suit families?

The WagonR has been a popular small family and city dweller’s car for a long time. The Maruti is now trying to woo larger families or those who occasionally need extra seats through the 7-seater variant. Given the dimensions of the WagonR, many are sceptical about how usable and comfortable the third row actually is. It's either a marketing ploy, or a budget conscious alternative to larger MPVs, some say. But the debate is which value really brings by adding the extra seats, or do they destroy the crucial strengths of the car; maneuverability and fuel efficiency. People are also talking about safety concerns, with seven people crammed in such a tiny car, on highways.

It's certainly more than a gimmick. I’ve used one for my family of five plus grandparents and it works great for short trips around the city. It's not ideal for long journeys but for running errands, or going to see a movie, it's perfect. It's a lot cheaper than getting a bigger car and the kids love sitting in the back.
