Is Tata Motors' TAMO RaceMo a missed opportunity?

When it unveiled its TAMO RaceMo concept at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, it caused a fair amount of buzz. Its mid engine layout, striking design and promise to be an affordable Indian sports car, seemed like Tata Motors was going to make a statement in the performance car segment. Nonetheless, the project was put on the shelf and never went to production. Many have wondered if Tata missed out on establishing itself as a serious player in the sports car market, and demonstrating its engineering prowess. The RaceMo could have been the one to change perceptions about Indian automotive design and manufacturing on a global stage. That cancellation prompts questions about Tata’s long term strategy in the premium/performance segments and whether it will try something similar again in the future.

Absolutely. Had the RaceMo been India's Miata, an affordable, fun sports car that would put a smile on your face. Here, Tata had a real shot at changing perceptions.

I disagree. Yet, the Indian market is not ready for a sports car. It was the right call by Tata to focus on mass market segments first.

It was ahead of its time. The RaceMo would have been the halo product, with limited sales. Right now, Tata needs volume sellers, not niche products.

Missed opportunity for sure. Check out how much buzz the DC Avanti created. With Tata’s brand behind it, the RaceMo could’ve done even better.

At least they should have gone through with a limited production run. Even if it wasn't profitable, the marketing value would have been worth it.

The real missed opportunity was that Tata didn’t put that 1.2L turbo engine in other Tata cars. Imagine a Tiago with 190 bhp!

Tata bit off more than they could chew, I think. It's not their usual fare to develop a sports car. It’s better to play it safe and not release a product that you know is half baked.
