Is owning a Thar a bad driver or that is a stereotype?

Indian road users are increasingly getting the impression that Mahindra Thar owners are aggressive and reckless drivers who think they own the road. Thar drivers have been in the news many times for antics like tailgating, cutting in front of cars, and basically ignoring traffic rules altogether and this stereotype has been fueled further. The Thar's towering size and the fact that it can go off road is thought to breed a sense of driver invincibility. Some say that we cannot say all Thar owners are bad because of actions of a few. Even the debate continues as to whether certain personality types, or do they just happen to find themselves in that type of vehicles. It has sparked ruckus about road safety, driver education and the responsibilities of having a powerful vehicle like Thar in your hands.

It’s just a stereotype, that’s all. I have seen enough responsible Thar drivers who follow traffic rules and are nice on the road. There are bad drivers in every type of vehicle.

Not all Thar owners are bad drivers, but there is a trend. There's a certain type of person that the car attracts, they want to show off, they want to dominate the road. The mentality of some owners, not the car's fault.

I think it's a bit of everything. The Thar's size and power can easily make a driver feel invincible, and drive recklessly. It’s all about the attitude of the individual and the driving skill.

I’m a Thar owner and I’m tired of this stereotype. We are responsible drivers who just like to off road. It shouldn't be the case that a few bad apples have to define the whole community.

The issue is not the Thar itself, but a lack of proper driver education in India. Any powerful vehicle can be a dangerous thing in the wrong hands. All drivers need better training, and stricter enforcement of traffic rules.

Newer Thar owners are more aggressive, while long time owners are more responsible. Maybe it's just a phase some do when they first get the car.

It’s a stereotype that exists for a reason, but that doesn’t mean it applies to everyone. I have seen good and bad Thar drivers. It’s more about the person in the car than the car itself.
