Is Nexon EV safe as its ICE counterpart?
by Neerajover 1 year ago0 views7 comments
Another important criteria when choosing a car is safety and Tat Nexon ICE version has proved to have quite good safety ratings. However, with a different weight distribution and battery placement, the EV version also prompts questions of how all those changes may impact its safety performance. The EV advocates argue that since the lower center of gravity can provide better stability and handling in emergency situations. Nevertheless, some people are worried about the battery in an extreme accident. The discussion also reaches into how the additional weight in the EV version effects braking distance and total crash behaviour. The discussion also covers how much good crumple zones and airbags do in an EV version, with a structure altered to make room for an electric powertrain.

We're overthinking this, aren't we. Tata's overall reputable for safety and they'd be foolish to ruin it no matter if it is on the EV version. They've probably just compensated for the differences, but the basic structure is the same. I'm just assuming it's just as safe until we see some evidence otherwise.

In driving both versions, I actually feel safer in the EV. Instant torque helps you to quickly avoid potential accidents and an additional layer of slowing down comes from regenerative braking. In emergency situations it feels more responsive.

I think Nexon EV is pretty decent for safety but I wonder how battery safety will fare over the long run. After a few years of use, what occurs? What safety effect does battery degradation have? It's a bit of a tough one because all these are questions only time will answer.

This worried me too, but later after research I realized that the Nexon EV has additional reinforcements over and above the battery protection. And it's been through all the testing. It's reassuring that it is based on an already safe platform (the ICE Nexon).

What I will say is that, as an engineer, I think the safety concerns are overblown. Today’s modern EVs are safety designed. The battery of the new Nexon EV is designed as multiple safety systems to prevent the problems as such in the event of a crash. You could also say that it’s even safer because there’s no flammable fuel.

I'm not so sure. The EV is heavier and the lower centre of gravity is better. That extra weight might mean you need longer to stop from a standstill, or will have more momentum if you’re involved in a crash. I need to see the specific crash test results for the EV version and judge after that.

According to what I’ve read, the Nexon EV should be as safe, if not more as, the Nexon ICE. The lower center of gravity of the battery pack can also help from preventing rollovers. Tata has also reinforced the structure to protect the battery. I’m pretty confident it’s safe.
