Is Maruti Zen still worth buying in 2024?

During the 90s and early 2000s the Maruti Zen was a popular hatchback in India. It was zippy, fuel efficient and small enough to handle the city traffic. But the car has been out of production for many years. With so much on offer with modern cars, from enhanced safety features to improved fuel efficiency, and creature comforts, some may question whether it’s still worth buying a used Zen. The Zen has its enthusiasts, who swear by the fun to drive nature, the simplicity of mechanics, while others argue that it’s old and unsafe by today’s standards. Spare parts are available, newer cars don’t have the same fuel efficiency and there is something enjoyable about owning a classic.

Absolutely! The Zen is a classic. It’s not the latest and greatest in car technology, but it’s got character. On top of that, it’s very easy to maintain and parts are still easily available.

No way, man. The standards for safety have come a long way since the days of the Zen. I certainly wouldn't be comfortable driving a car without airbags or ABS and putting my family in that car.

It’s what you’re looking for. The Zen is a great fun project car to tinker with on weekends if you're looking for one. But for a daily driver? There are better options.

If you can find one in good condition, I’d say it’s worth it. Even by today's standards the Zen's lightweight chassis and responsive steering makes it a blast to drive.

I really think nostalgia is getting the better of people. For its time, the Zen was great, but technology has moved on. A modern hatchback is safer and more efficient, so you’re better off with one.
