Is Mahindra BE 09's futuristic design a hit or a miss?

Since its unveiling, the BE 09's bold and unconventional styling has been attracting attention. In typical SUV fashion, it boasts sharp angles, sleek lines and a unique front fascia that breaks with the traditional mold. It’s argued as a breath of fresh air in a sea of cookie cutter vehicles, or that it might be too avant garde for mainstream appeal. There are also more practical things like aerodynamic efficiency and maximizing interior space, in the design. But there is a worry about how well this futuristic look will age over time and whether it will connect with conservative Indian buyers. This design language also leads to a debate on how it will guide Mahindra's future models, and the automobile industry in India as a whole.

I think it's a miss. India's roads and climate are tough – those fancy creases and edges are going to get dinged up and collect dust. Sometimes simple is better.

As a designer, I'm impressed. It’s not weird for the sake of being weird, it’s cohesive and purposeful. It could be a turning point for Indian automotive design.

I'm on the fence. I commend Mahindra for taking chances, but I fear that design may do more to limit its appeal. Perhaps it’s too polarizing to be a mass market.

I think it's a hit for me but I'm worried about practicality. Sure, those sharp angles might look cool but how is visibility? Good luck finding affordable body panels if you fender bender.

The design is growing on me. I first thought it's too much, but as I look at it, I love the details. It isn’t gimmicky, but it is different.

They've gone too far, honestly. This is not in a good way, because it looks like something out of a sci fi movie. I'm afraid that it will look out of place in a few years and age poorly.

I'm loving the bold design! For an Indian manufacturer to take a risk is about time. It’s not going to be everyones cup of tea, but at least it’s not another generic blob on wheels.
