Is it worth the jump from a Myvi to a Vios, or save up for the jump to a Corolla instead?
When you’re looking to upgrade from your first car, which is usually a Perodua Myvi or similar compact hatchback, many car owners in Malaysia and other Southeast Asian countries find themselves in this dilemma. The Toyota Vios is a step up in size and perceived premium feel, but it’s not too expensive. On the other hand, the Toyota Corolla is a size, feature, and status upgrade, but it will cost a lot more. The value proposition of each option is investigated, based on immediate needs as opposed to immediate satisfaction, the financial implications and what kind of driving experience can be obtained using each car. It delves into the broader topic of how you should go about upgrading your car; should you do it in baby steps, or save up for a bigger change?

If you're financing the purchase, the Vios is a good upgrade. For most people, the jump in monthly payments from Myvi to Vios is manageable. On the other hand, the Corolla, which might stretch your budget too far.

Then why not consider other options in the Vios price range? Similar upgrades from the Myvi can be had in cars like the Honda City or Nissan Almera, but with some advantages over the Vios. Don't restrict yourself to Toyota.

I made the Myvi to Vios jump myself, and I kind of regret not waiting and saving up for the Corolla. Sure, the Vios is better, but not that much better that it feels like a true upgrade. It would have been a more satisfying long term choice.

I'd say go for the Vios. It’s a nice middle ground, as it gets you a taste of a more premium car without the luxury car price of a Corolla. If you ever need, you can always upgrade to a Corolla.

It depends on your needs. If you spend most of your time on the highway, the Vios is quite an upgrade from the Myvi. If you’re mostly in the city, it’s not that big difference. If not, then stick with the Myvi or go all out for the Corolla.

I upgraded from a Myvi to a Vios, and I’m satisfied. It’s a marked improvement in refinement and comfort without costing the earth. The Corolla is nice, but it’s a big financial leap that not everyone will need to take.

If you’re okay with the size of the Myvi, then there isn’t really much point in jumping to a Vios. Instead, save up for the Corolla — it’s a much bigger step in comfort, features, and driving experience.
