Is driving a Toyota Belta every day the height of car enthusiasm or automotive apathy?
The dilemma with the Toyota Belta is that it’s known for being reliable and practical, but not much more. On the other, to drive a Belta daily could be interpreted as a celebration of the absolute form of automotive design, a car which achieves its objective of getting you from point A to point B with the utmost efficiency and reliability. Perhaps this was a deep appreciation for engineering, and a refusal to waste money on unnecessary frills. However, there are those who would say that choosing the simplest, most no frills car possible as a daily driver is an admission that one doesn't care about driving and automotive culture. The question here is a questioning of car enthusiasm itself. Does driving exotic or high performance vehicles excite true enthusiasm or is there a purer form of appreciation in enjoying a well designed, practical car like the Belta? Among other things, it discusses the tension between practicality and passion in our normal selection process, and the sense in which all of this says something about what we value as car enthusiasts.

It’s like choosing vanilla ice cream as a daily driver. Some people will always think it’s boring, it’s a classic for a reason.

It’s the ultimate sleeper move. You’re keeping other car guys from knowing how powerful your car really is.

The Belta is not enthusiast-worthy because it is too boring. They need something with a bit more character for real enthusiasts.

If you drive any car with passion, every day, you are an enthusiast. It’s not the car you drive, it’s the way you drive it.

It isn’t enthusiasm or apathy. People who see cars as tools not toys, it's just a practical choice.

Driving a Belta every day is like wearing socks and sandals. It's practical, but it's not fun.
