Is 285 bhp of BE 6e overkill for Indian roads?
The Mahindra BE 6e has a power output of 285 bhp which is far more than most cars in the same price range and segment. Exciting though this high power figure is for enthusiasts, it does prompt the question about its practicality in India. In many places Indian roads are congested and speed limits are strictly enforced. Moreover, the high performance driving infrastructure is limited. But the instant torque delivery of electric motors might make for more useable everyday use of this power — from quick overtakes to merging onto highways. But there’s also the question of what this high power output will do to the car’s range and efficiency, which are key factors for an electric vehicle. Some say this power is essential for a premium EV experience, others that it isn't and it could be dangerous in inexperienced hands.
Absolutely not! More power is always better. It’s not just about being fast, but having that extra kick when you need it.
It's way too much. The roads are not there and we don't have the driving discipline for cars with that kind of power. It's just asking for trouble.
I think it's perfect. That extra power is needed because EVs are heavy and you want them to feel sporty and fun to drive.
It's too much for everyday use, but fantastic for highway trips. Think about how simple it will be to pass trucks on one lane roads!
It's not the power that's the issue, it's how they do it. It could be very usable even in the city traffic if Mahindra tunes it well.
I'm more worried about range. The cost of all that power is efficiency. A 200 bhp version would be better, but with better range.
This isn’t about need, it’s about want. If I'm paying premium EV money, I want premium EV performance.
