I rode the KTM 690 Enduro in comparison to its adventure bike siblings in terms of long distance touring, and the results were… unexpected.

Long-distance travel comfort and capability are the main design objectives of adventure motorcycles, with large fuel tanks, wind protection, and luggage options. Sometimes used for extended trips and adventure riding, the only off-road-focused machine is the KTM 690 Enduro. Some riders like the versatility of the bike and say it's comfortable enough to do long-haul, while some say it doesn't have the amenities and comfort of a purpose-built adventure tourer. So, how does the 690 Enduro fare against bikes such as the BMW R1250GS or even KTM's own 790 Adventure as far as going the long miles out on the trail? For example, comfort, fuel range, luggage capacity, and touring ability.

I have done a 3,000-mile trip on my 690, and I can say it is certainly capable of touring. Is it as plush as a Gold Wing? No way. It’s not luxurious, but it’s comfortable enough, and the versatility makes up for it.

I believe people underestimate the 690’s touring ability. With a good windscreen, a comfy seat, and some luggage, it’s a tourer that can rip up singletrack too. The way you set it up is the key.

The 690 is the ultimate adventure bike for me. It's not as comfy as a GS, but it'll go places bikes like those can't. If you're willing to give up some comfort in the name of off-road capability, it's hard to beat.

I've been on tour on both a 690 and 1190 Adventure. The 690 is possible, but you'll need to stop for fuel more often, and it's definitely more tiring on long stretches of highway. That really depends on what your priorities are.

I believe this is the perfect middle ground. It’s comfortable enough to tour on, but you’re not carrying a 600-pound behemoth when you hit the trails. With the right mods, it makes a great lightweight adventure bike.

It’s not going to be as long-distance comfortable as a GS. For mixed riding, the 690 is a great bike, but if you're predominantly going to be on the highway, you'll be happier on a dedicated adventure bike.

I have done several 500-plus mile days on my 690, and while it is not as plush as a big ADV bike, it is very comfortable. The secret is a good seat and some wind protection. And it’s a lot more fun when the pavement ends.
