How will the XEV 9e fare against petrol powered SUVs on Indian roads?
by Ashutoshover 1 year ago0 views7 comments
On paper, the Mahindra XEV 9e has some pretty impressive performance figures, owing to its electric powertrain which can deliver its instant torque and quick acceleration. But in real world Indian driving conditions, the performance never comes close to these numbers. Influence of frequent traffic jams, varying road conditions, and severe weather conditions impacts vehicle performance day by day. Although electric vehicles like the XEV 9e often shine in stop and go traffic because of their instant torque, prolonged high speed driving or long climbs can be a problem. Also, the effect of using air conditioning, which is a necessity in hot climate of India, on the vehicle's range and performance is also considered. The familiar petrol SUVs Indian drivers are accustomed to will also be used to judge XEV 9e's performance. What it does with mundane activities like passing on highways, maneuvering through clogged city streets or trudging through rough rural roads will be key in forming public opinion of its true world abilities.

I actually think it'll surprise a lot of people. Electric motors are super efficient and, with good tuning, could beat many petrol SUVs on a day to day basis.

Do not underestimate the effect of AC use on the range. In summers, it could make a huge difference in real world performance compared to the advertised figures.

Given the nature of the battery, it'll probably feel more responsive than petrol SUVs, but the real question is how consistent that performance will be as the battery depletes.

I wonder how it performs in extreme heat. Does it throttle power (rather than drawing all power from the battery) to protect the battery? In peak summer that could be a downside.

How it would manage our potholed roads and speed breakers is the real test. If the suspension is tuned right, it can be very game changing.

However, it will probably not prove as great a choice on long highway trips as petrol SUVs. Inter city travel could be real problem due to range anxiety and charging stops.

I'm sure it would smoke most petrol SUVs in city driving. But that instant torque will also be perfect for zipping through traffic and quick overtakes.
