How reliable is the FZ8 at high miles?

by Sukhmandeep Kaurover 1 year ago0 views8 comments
Because many Yamaha FZ8s are now approaching higher mileage, the long term reliability of the bike is becoming more and more of an interest to current and potential owners. This is a contentious topic as people discuss how the FZ8 stands up over time to its competitors and what sort of issues, if any, seem to pop up as the odometer ticks over. Riders who have clocked high mileage on FZ8s share their experiences and maintenance requirements, as well as wear items and any surprises they've encountered. The conversation often centers around whether (and how often) to service the machine, how good Yamaha's engineering truly is and how much a rider's style and environmental factors might affect longevity. Some claim that the relatively simple design of the FZ8 helps keep it durable, whilst others point to potential weak points owners should be aware of. For those thinking about a used FZ8, or those wondering how many miles their current bike has left, this discussion is for you.

However, the transmission on these is rock solid. I’ve never heard of anyone having gearbox issues, even at really high miles.

After 60,000 miles mine started burning oil. Still not a deal breaker, but something to keep in mind.

If a high mileage FZ8 has been properly looked after, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it. They're built to last.

These bikes will run forever as long as you don't abuse it. It is seriously overbuilt for the power it puts out.

I've heard of some of the guys having trouble with the cam chain tensioner at high miles. Something to keep an eye on.

I have 80,000 miles on mine and it’s still going strong. The trick is to keep the oil changes and valve adjustments up to date.

In general, they are reliable, but you have to watch out for electrical problems as they age. I've had some charging system problems.

These things are bulletproof. With over 100,000 km, my FZ8 still runs like new. As long as you keep up with regular maintenance, you’re fine.
