How is the Dominar 200 off the road?
The Dominar 200 is marketed as a sports tourer but some riders have wondered what it can do off road. On the other hand, you have its relatively heavy weight and street oriented design, which some people believe makes it unable to handle rough terrain. Mixed results have been reported by some owners of taking their Dominars on light trails and unpaved roads. The suspension setup of the bike and ground clearance and the tires suitability for off road terrain are discussed. It’s also interesting to see how it stacks up to more adventure oriented bikes in its price range. Many riders with India’s diverse road conditions are wondering if the Dominar 200 can be a versatile option for highway touring as well as an occasional off road excursion. Now, let’s see what riders who have pushed the Dominar beyond the tarmac have to say.
Last month, I took my Dominar 200 on a mild off road trail, and it was... interesting. The torque definitely helps power through some obstacles, but the weight is definitely a challenge. It won't handle like a proper off roader, but don't expect that.
To be honest, it's not built for off roading. I tried a few dirt paths and the bike just doesn’t feel at home. It’s too stiff suspension, not too bad ground clearance. This one stays on the roads.
Some modifications will enable it to take on light off road duties. I put more aggressive tires on and changed the suspension. It’s not a dirt bike, but it can get around unpaved roads and gravel paths pretty well.
I've done mine on some rural backroads and it does better than you'd think. It’s all about going slow and steady. It'll never be a winner in off road races, but if you're careful then it'll get you through.
I’ve ridden the Dominar 200 off road as well as the Hero Xpulse 200, and I can assure you the Dominar is not built for it. Rough terrain, standing up, it's too heavy and the ergonomics are all wrong. If you're looking for a bike to tour and off road, look elsewhere.
People expect too much, I think. It isn’t an adventure bike; it’s a sports tourer. With that said, it does pretty well on bad roads and light gravel. The only thing to be careful of is not taking it rock crawling or through deep mud.
I've done some mild offroading on my Dominar 200, and it's not great, but it's not the worst either. In fact, the bike's weight actually helps with stability on loose surfaces. But just be ready for some tight turns to get your workout.
