How is CVT transmission in the Elantra different from automatics?
Like many modern compact cars, the Hyundai Elantra is sold with a CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) in most of its models. Hyundai calls their Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT). CVTs are praised for their smooth operation and better fuel economy, but they've also been panned for their 'rubber band' feel and possible reliability problems. Some drivers unfamiliar with traditional automatics find the CVT’s behavior unusual or unpleasant. Seamless acceleration and improved MPG is earned by others. The long term durability of CVTs is also debated against conventional automatics. While Hyundai says their IVT is a solution to many of the typical CVT gripes, owner and critics alike seem to have a wide array of opinions.
At first I was skeptical of the CVT, but after a year of driving my Elantra I don’t notice it any more. It's super smooth in traffic and the fuel savings are real.
I can't stand the CVT in my Elantra. It’s sluggish and unresponsive, most noticeably when you’re merging onto highways. I wish my old car had traditional auto.
I think Hyundai's IVT is definitely better than some other CVTs I've driven. In automatic mode, it simulates shift points to give you a feeling that it’s more like a regular automatic. It's a good compromise.
Normal driving is fine with the CVT, but if you want something sporty get the N Line with the DCT. It’s a completely different experience.
My CVT in my Elantra has been flawless at 50K miles. If you follow the maintenance schedule it should be reliable.
It took a bit of getting used to the CVT, but I now like how smooth it is. I’m averaging 40 mpg on my commute, which is awesome, plus.
If the CVT bothers you, at least spend a decent length of time in the car before you buy. There are some people who never get used to the feel and some who like it.
