How does the weight of the Himalayan 650 impact its off road capability?

Despite its weight, the current Himalayan is lauded for being easy to handle off road, particularly for riders who aren’t used to it. But with the move to a 650cc engine, there is always going to be concern about how that extra weight will affect its performance on rough terrain. The Himalayan 650 seems to walk the line between on road comfort and off road agility, something that adventure bikes often have to do. The added power will make up for the weight gain, some say, while others fear it could make the bike too unwieldy for technical trails. Speculation exists as well about potential changes to the suspension and frame to deal with the additional weight and power, which would also change the character of the bike. As a result, there have been debates about whether Royal Enfield is making the Himalayan more on road touring focused or if they can retain its off road talent.

It will definitely be heavier, but I think the extra power will make up for it. That 650 twin might actually be easier to muscle through deep sand or mud.

No way, man. Weight is the enemy off-road. Good luck picking it up when you drop it, and it’ll be a handful on technical trails. The original Himalayan was so charming because of its simplicity and lightness.

I believe it's going to depend on how RE distributes the weight. Maybe if they keep it low and centered it won't be as big of a problem as we're thinking. And, with better suspension, it would actually be able to better soak up bumps than the 411.

Most Himalayan owners aren’t doing hardcore off roading anyway, so let’s be real. On the highway a bit more weight won't matter, and it'll be way better on fire roads and light trails.

I'm optimistic. Take the Africa Twin for example, these bikes are heavy but still able to go off road. The balance of the bike and the skill of the rider is all there is. The 650 could be a great all rounder if RE does it right.
