How does the Skoda Kamiq ride in comparison to its rivals and on rough roads?

For compact SUVs that frequently play a family car role, ride quality, it seems, is key. The MQB A0 based Skoda Kamiq is supposed to offer a compromise between comfort and handling. But opinions on its ride quality, particularly on roads of a less than perfect nature, can be all over the place. All of this stuff is very important, and the way the car handles on the banking is influenced by things such as suspension setup, what tires you run, and even the way you've tuned the car. There are those who want a soft comfortable ride for their daily commuting, and then those who are after the solid right for sportier handling. Drivers and reviewers often fight over the performance of the Kamiq on rough terrain, on speed bumps and long trips. So let's see how the Kamiq’s ride quality compares to its rivals and whether it’s a good compromise for a variety of driving situations.

I have driven the Kamiq and VW T Cross and the Kamiq just feels more planted on rough roads. Without the floaty feeling, it soaks up bumps better. The suspension tuning was nailed by Skoda.

At least, I am too picky, but for my taste the Kamiq's ride is a bit too firm. On potholed city streets, it can get jarring, but it’s fine on smooth highways. A family oriented SUV is not something I expected to be uncomfortable.

Compared to a Ford EcoSport, the Kamiq feels like a luxury car. Not Rolls Royce smooth, but for the money, it’s impressive. They make the long motorway journeys a breeze.

It’s very good ride quality, but the thing that really stands out to me is the noise insulation. It’s pretty quiet in the cabin, even on rough roads. That makes the whole experience feel a bit more premium than some of the more expensive competitors.

The ride quality I think depends a lot on the wheel size. I drove another one with 18 inch wheels and it was too harsh. I ended up buying the 16 inch version and it’s much more comfortable on our potholed roads.

Living out in the country, with lots of rocky, unpaved roads, I've been impressed with the Kamiq's ability to navigate. It's built on gravel and doesn't feel like some other compact SUVs I've tried that have been out of their depth.

It's a compact SUV, let's be real, it's not a Range Rover. For what it is, the ride is good, but if you're hoping this will ride over the errors in the pavement you may be disappointed. That’s the game of managing expectations.
