How does the old V8 compare to this new twin turbo V6?

With the Land Cruiser 300 series, Toyota has switched up its powertrain, departing from a naturally aspirated V8 to a twin turbo V6. This shift in Goodyear has been triggering fierce debates among Land Cruiser enthusiasts and prospects. Using the new engine, fuel efficiency is improved and emissions decreased, although performance is said to be strong. Though, a few purists maintain that away with the V8 and low end torque, not to mention character and exhaust sound was really taking the Land Cruiser experience away. The turbocharged engine has yet to be proven to have the long term reliability and durability of the V8, especially in harsh environments. One common topic of discussion is the balance between this modernization, and keeping the vehicle's core identity and capabilities.

The new V6 is a beast! It feels way more responsive than the old V8, is more powerful and gets better fuel economy. When I first heard about it, I was slightly skeptical, but once I drove it I am sold.

There is no sound, no feel to beat a V8. For all its extra efficiency, the new engine lacks the soul of the old one. It's just not that experience however.

But I think Toyota made the right call. The V6 is very powerful and fuel saving is significant. 2024, we have to get with the times.

Long term reliability is still an experiment. These turbos add complexity, but the V8 is bulletproof. It remains to be seen if its durability will live up to the incredible reputation of the old one.

The V6 performs very well but I worry how it would handle Australia's Outback or even Sahara Desert. Those environments proved the V8.

The V6 is more rounded all round. On the highway, it's a whole lot smoother, but it's got plenty of low end torque for off roading. It's a win-win in my book.

I love the V8, but there's a reason they switched it. Toyota had to adapt, as emissions regulations get stricter. At least they didn’t go with a tiny 4 cent cylinder like other manufacturers.
